Hey, Jammers! Today I’m going to be sharing some of my favorite facts about the Outstanding Owl. Now, without further ado, let’s get into the facts!
Not all owls make a hooting sound! The Eastern Screech Owl whinnies like a horse, and the Barn Owl makes hissing sounds! In fact, the Saw-whet Owl makes a noise that sounds like a saw.
The smallest owl in the world is the Elf Owl, which stands at about 5-6 inches tall! This tiny owl weighs only 1.5 ounces. On the other hand, the largest owl in appearance is the Great Grey Owl, which is a whopping 32 inches tall! That’s almost 3 feet!
Some owls, like the Great Horned Owl, eat their own kind. This bird is the top predator to the Barred Owl, which is much smaller.
Owls and humans typically get along well. Falconers have used owls since the Middle Ages, and they have appeared in Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs. Owls are very social and intelligent, though it’s illegal to keep one as a pet in the United States! In Japan, there are even Owl Cafes where you get to hang around owls whilst drinking your tea or coffee!
Owls are masters of camouflage! Many owls have markings that allow them to blend into their surroundings. For Instance, the African Scops Owl can look just like a tree!
Owls are incredibly sneaky. While flying, owls make virtually no noise at all! They have special feathers that are designed to break turbulence, thus reducing sound.
There are around 200 different species of owls in the world! The most common ones are the Great Horned Owl, Barn Owl, Screech Owl, and the Great Grey Owl.
Most owls hunt insects, small mammals, and small birds. Some owls species even hunt fish, and as stated before, the Great Horned Owl is known to eat other owls!
Owls are capable of rotating their necks 270 degrees, 135 in either direction. It’s a common misconception that owls are able to rotate their heads a full 360 degrees. A full rotation would cause circulation to be cut off to the head.
The Northern Hawk Owl is capable of hearing prey as much as 12 inches under the snow or ice!
That’s all of the facts I have for you today! I hope you enjoyed this article and learned a few things about these magnificent birds! With that being said, I’ll see you next week! Bye!
