Chapter One; Me and My Broken Heart
A young wolf, around six, began to pace around a dark room. She continued to tug her ear and scratch her fur, impatiently waiting for a specific woman to ruin her day. The young wolf sat alone for another hour, glancing longingly outside of the tiny window in the small shack she called home. Just as the little wolf closed her eyes, a full-grown female wolf swung open the large, metal door. The little wolf jumped in horror, but soon regained the little confidence that was clustered inside of her.
“Well isn’t it my daughter. Hello dear.” The wolf greeted her daughter with an unusual grin, causing the little wolf to step back. Her mother was never that friendly to her.
“Hello mother. How was your day out?” The little wolf asked.
“Very well. But do not change the subject, Mariah. Can you create phantoms on your own yet?” The mother’s happy expression suddenly turned dark, causing the little wolf to bite her claws.
“No mother. I am sorry. I have failed you once again.” Mariah sighed, covering her face so her mother wouldn’t see her cry.
“What kind of Destroyer can’t even summon her own phantom army? You’re worthless to our kind.” The wolf roared, transforming herself into her phantom form with the flick of a paw.
“Can you even transform into a phantom yet?” The mother roared with laughter, flicking her wrist to transform into her wolf form once again.
“No, mother. But I’m working hard.” Mariah stumbled, sitting down at the small dinner table. She had two sandwiches prepared on the rusty table.
“If you were working at all, you’d be destroying Jamaa already!” The wolf replied, snatching her sandwich from the rusty plate it was sitting on. She gobbled it down in one gulp. Mariah shivered. The two sat in silence for a long time until Mariah spoke.
“Mother?” Mariah asked.
“Yes dear?” The wolf replied.
“Who is my father?” She muttered quietly, looking down at her half-eaten sandwich to avoid her mother’s nasty glare. Almost every week, Mariah asked the same question.
“I’ve told you a hundred times! He is a horrible man that tried to kill you when you were born.” The wolf explained, glaring at her daughter.
“But you’ve never said a name!” Mariah explained, smacking her paw over her mouth after realizing she had raised her voice to her mother.
“Do NOT ever raise your voice at me! His name does not matter. He was worthless.” The wolf explained, shuffling in her seat.
“Was he a phantom? Was he supposed to take the role as Phantom King after grandfather passed the role to you?” Mariah asked.
“He was a horrible person. He never would’ve been king as long as I was around.” The wolf growled, picking up her rusty plate and throwing it into the sink.
“Now run off now. You have some studies to do on Jamaa’s history and geography. A good Destroyer knows the perfect spot to attack.” The wolf explained, sitting on a torn-up couch in a tiny room with a radio.
“Yes mother.” Mariah explained, walking off to read a novel in her bedroom. While Mariah was reading in her room, the wolf sat down and talked to herself.
“Come on Hatchi. There has to be a way to seize Jamaa.” The wolf sighed, putting her head in her paws.
